WikiLeaks gets offshore account details from ex-Swiss banker

WikiLeaks founder, Julian Assange, has been given information on 2,000 high net worth individuals with offshore accounts by ex-Swiss banker, Rudolf Elmer.

At a press conference in London yesterday, the former Bank Julius Bär employee said he was making the handover so that the information can be investigated.

It should appear on the WikiLeaks website in the Spring, while Mr Elmer is due to stand trial in Switzerland this week, for earlier whistleblowing activities.

Bank Julius Bär has told the BBC that the former employee was “disgruntled and frustrated about unfulfilled career aspirations”, and after leaving the bank embarked upon “a personal intimidation campaign and vendetta” against his former employers.

Meanwhile, Mr Assange has already revealed plans to leak confidential documents relating to a major US bank, early this year.

In an interview with Forbes magazine in November, he promised to “lay bare … secrets on the Web for every customer, every competitor, every regulator to examine and pass judgment on”.

At one point Bank of America was tipped as the likely target.
