Despite Police decision to seal off all major roads leading to the heart of the capital, telling people to stay away from any rally Saturday, thousands of people has march with proud at various location in the city of Kuala Lumpur.
From TheMalaysianInsiders – Bersih 2.0 leaders led by national laureate Datuk A. Samad Said said today their rally was a “great success” as an estimated 50,000 people turned out in support of their movement, despite being unable to hand their memorandum to set up a royal commission to look into electoral reform to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.
The 76-year-old poet was boldly dressed in the distinctive yellow Bersih 2.0 T-shirt, which has been outlawed by the police under Home Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein’s orders since July 1.
Most of the BERSIH 2.0 protestors had mainly thronged Puduraya, Dataran Maybank and outside Stadium Merdeka, where Bersih 2.0 had wanted to hold its rally to call for free and fair elections.
During the protest, a total of 1,401 people were detained, including 1,273 men, 115 women, 12 boys and one girl.
Just like previous BERSIH, Bersih 2.0 declared its rally today was a success as it drew a 50,000-strong crowd while the Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Ismail Omar said this evening that only 6,000 turned up.
